Behind the Studio: My Why for Starting FloraLume

Hi, I am Kayla — Architect & founder of FloraLume Studio.

I started FloraLume Studio not just as a design practice, but as a personal mission: to help people live in spaces that feel rooted, calm, and deeply connected to the natural world.

Where It All Began

Over the years, I found myself drawn to single family residential design — homes filled with light, warmth, and simple beauty. I have always believed that architecture should do more than just shelter us; it should inspire us, support our well-being, and provide us with a retreat we can look forward to after a long work day.

That belief led me to explore biophilic design and Scandinavian principles, two design philosophies that I have grown to admire and appreciate. Both embrace simplicity, intentionality, and a deep respect for the environment — and together, they create spaces that feel comforting.

Why FloraLume?

The name FloraLume is a nod to two elements I love most in architecture: nature (flora) and light (lume). Light shapes how we feel in a space. Nature evokes our senses and provides an emotional response that is both uplifting and motivational. My goal is to design homes that celebrate both.

Whether it is a modern cabin nestled in the woods or a small, light-filled city home, I am here to help clients bring their vision to life — in a way that feels meaningful, sustainable, and uniquely theirs.

Who I Design For

I work with people who want more than just a beautiful home or space. My clients often care deeply about how their spaces feel. They want warmth, peace, clarity — and a connection to nature.

  • A couple downsizing to build their dream cabin in the mountains

  • A family looking to expand to build their dream home. I design architecture and spaces that frame the natural views surrounding the site, while also bringing the views inside the home by incorporating plants, trees, water features, and natural light.

  • A landowner dreaming of transforming their property into a meaningful short-term rental experience — not just a place to stay, but a place rooted in design and nature.

  • A developer or entrepreneur envisioning a wellness retreat or eco-conscious community that centers on simplicity, restoration, and connection.

  • A business owner who is looking to expand or build out an existing space.

  • Someone wanting to design a tiny home, art studio, or nature hideaway that brings them closer to the outdoors and their values.

Whether you are building a quiet place to live or an experience others will seek out, I approach every project with intention, curiosity, and a deep respect for the land it lives on.

No matter the scale or style, I always start with the same question:
“How do you want to feel in your home?”

Let’s Build Something Beautiful

This blog will be a place where I share design tips, project stories, and ideas that inspire me. If you are dreaming about a space that brings you closer to nature — I would love to hear from you.

Thanks for being here.
— Kayla
